The majestic Burghausen Castle stretches along the high banks of the Salzach River in picturesque Bavaria, Germany. Built in 1025, it is one of the oldest surviving fortifications in the country. Over the centuries, different architectural styles such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque have transformed the appearance of the castle.
Its original builder, Count Albert I of Bogen, erected it to establish a strategic position for monitoring salt trade between Reichenhall and Passau. In the 15th century, after numerous renovations and expansions involving renowned architects such as Hans Krumenauer, Jörg Strobach, and Hans Nesensohn, it reached its current size and form.
As a witness to Bavarian history, Burghausen Castle has witnessed many significant events. Parts of the castle were damaged during the Thirty Years’ War but later restored. Its ownership changed multiple times, from the Counts of Kraiburg to the Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut, the Salzburg Archdiocese, and the Wittelsbachs.
The primary purpose of the castle was for defense and as a residence for the rulers. It also served as an administrative center, for example in the magnificent Duke’s Hall, which was the meeting place for the Bavarian diet. Its rooms charm visitors with exquisite wall paintings and intricate stucco work.
Today, Burghausen Castle is used for cultural activities. The castle museum provides insights into the history of the castle and its surroundings. Visitors can explore the impressive complex, appreciate the view from its towers, and participate in events such as concerts, theater performances, and medieval festivals.
Burghausen Castle is not yet a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
