The Ottobeuren Monastery, located in Bavaria, Germany, is an impressive Baroque building. It was founded in 764. Although the exact architects and construction managers of its construction remain unclear, the surrounding park was designed by the renowned Baroque architects Dominikus Zimmermann and his son Johann Baptist Zimmermann.
The historical depth of the Ottobeuren Monastery is reflected in the numerous eras it has gone through. Particularly influential was its occupation by Swedish troops from 1632 to 1634 during the Thirty Years’ War, which resulted in the monastery being looted and heavily damaged. Ignaz Waibel subsequently supervised the reconstruction efforts.
Under Abbot Rupert Neß in the 18th century, the monastery experienced a renaissance. Numerous expansions and renovations were carried out, including the enlargement of the St. Alexander and Theodor monastery church and the monastery complex itself. During its active times, the monastery not only served for liturgy and monastic life, but the monks also operated a school and managed agricultural land for self-sufficiency.
Today, the Ottobeuren Monastery is home to the Benedictine Abbey of Ottobeuren, a community of Benedictine monks. It remains a place of spirituality and also offers accommodations for guests seeking peace and contemplation. As a tourist destination, it is particularly popular due to its magnificent Baroque architectural style and impressive monastery church.
Contrary to some assumptions, the Ottobeuren Monastery is not listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
