The Weltenburg Abbey, situated idyllically on the Danube in Bavaria, Germany, and located about 30 kilometers northwest of Regensburg, is one of the oldest monasteries in Bavaria, founded in 617 AD. The picturesque monastery can be found near the village of Weltenburg, part of the municipality of Kelheim, and represents a magnificent example of Bavarian Baroque architecture.

Initiated by the brothers Eustachius and Agilus on the instructions of Saint Rupert of Salzburg, it was originally inhabited by monks from the Benedictine monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced several phases of expansion and renovation. Particularly noteworthy is the period under Abbot Maurus Bächl in the 17th century, during which impressive buildings such as the St. Georg monastery church were constructed.

The eventful history of Weltenburg Abbey was marked by political and religious conflicts. During the Thirty Years’ War, the monastery suffered significant damage from Swedish troops, but extensive restoration work was carried out after the end of the war to restore its former splendor.

To this day, the monastery remains a vibrant place of prayer and meditation, where Benedictine monks live and work. A highlight of the monastery complex is the Asam Church, an impressive Baroque gem designed by the renowned brothers Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam.

For visitors, Weltenburg Abbey offers not only spiritual inspiration but also culinary enjoyment in the beer garden on the banks of the Danube, known for the traditional Weltenburg Abbey beer from one of the oldest monastery breweries worldwide.
